This was the submission made by panelists, discussants and MDAs at the ” word privacy day” to mark the 4th day of the week-long event.

According to Managing Directors of NITDA parastatals – NIGcomsat , Galaxy backbone and the Director General , National identity management commission (NIMC), it is important for Nigerians to key into the data privacy policy as we begin our journey into the digital economy. They noted that the Nigeria Data Privacy Regulation (NDPR) will ensure safety for businesses and foreign investors, and as such it is our collective responsibility to safeguard any data in our care in accordance with the provisions of our mandate and laws.

They further commended the efforts of the Director-General National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Malam Kashif Inuwa Abdullahi on his efforts in ensuring data protection laws, as data protection extends towards protecting our sovereignty as a nation. Also, it was noted that while ensuring that the Data Protection bill which stands to enhance the existing rule of data privacy, is used in a manner that recognises the privacy of individuals.

Giving his good will message at the Webinar, the Minister of Communications and Digital economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami said that, data protection and data privacy are key proponents in the 8 pillars of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) which includes: developmental regulation; digital literacy and skills; digital services development and promotion; software infrastructure; digital society and emerging technologies; and indigenous content promotion and adoption.

The Minister also commended public organisations who have been compliant to the NDPR since its implementation as he assured Nigerians of continuous efforts by the Ministry to ensure data privacy.

Dr Pantami said that,the data privacy day has become a globally accepted event to mark and create more awareness on data protection and privacy policies.Countries like Canada amongst others have keyed into the celebration. He said, “we have been doing well than most developing countries in the aspect of privacy protection”.

He further noted that the Nigeria data protection regulation ( NDPR) is fundamental for digital transformation in Nigeria.

The Director-General, NITDA, Malam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi added that the Expo held on Tuesday to mark the week-long event, showcased novel products as innovators presented solutions on how to ease the compliance filing process, visitor management, blockchain, cryptography among other ideas.

He also commended the young students who participated in the virtual class for their productive engagement, as he assured them that NITDA will continue to engage young minds in order to unleash their full potentials.
